19 year old Chorlton born photographer Hattie Mcaffer has always loved dogs. For her latest series, she set out to capture not just the animals themselves but the bonds they share with their owners - bonds that are as varied and idiosyncratic as the people and pets who walk Manchester’s streets.

What shines through in her portraits is a shared pride: the subtle ways people hold the lead, the small gestures of affection, the sense of companionship that’s written into posture, expression, and stance. Each photograph is a glimpse into a relationship that’s both ordinary and quietly extraordinary.

The project was also a chance for Mcaffer to push herself into new territory. Approaching strangers, hearing the stories behind how each dog came into someone’s life, and translating those encounters into images, all of it demanded a mix of curiosity, boldness, and trust.
